Taking accurate manual measurements of a niche is the most critical step in designing a functional fitted wardrobe, preventing costly structural misalignments during installation.

The Physics of Uneven Niches: Why Three Dimensions Matter

Residential walls are rarely perfectly vertical, and floors are seldom completely level. When planning a fitted wardrobe, treating a niche as a perfect geometric cube is a common error that leads to components binding or leaving unsightly gaps. Gravity, settling foundations, and plastering variations create deviations in every plane. To capture these irregularities, you must measure the width, height, and depth at three distinct points: the top, the middle, and the bottom. Always record the smallest dimension of the three when planning the exterior frame of the wardrobe, as this represents the absolute clearance limit for inserting the pre-assembled carcass.

How to Measure Width, Height, and Depth Accurately

For the width, measure horizontally across the back wall at floor level, mid-height (approximately 120 cm), and ceiling level. Repeat this process near the front opening of the niche to check for tapering. For the height, measure vertically from the floor to the ceiling at the far-left, center, and far-right sections. When evaluating depth, ensure there is sufficient clearance for hanging garments; standard hangers require a minimum internal depth of 550 mm, meaning the physical niche must be at least 600 mm deep to accommodate sliding door tracks without compressing sleeves.

Checking for Squareness and Wall Bowing

An extra step to guarantee a perfect fit is checking the vertical alignment (plumb) and horizontal alignment (level). Use a spirit level or a plumb bob along the vertical edges. If a wall bows outward or inward in the middle, a filler panel (scribe piece) will be required. This is a thin strip of matching timber or laminate fitted between the wardrobe frame and the wall, which can be planed down to match the exact contour of the uneven masonry.

Factoring in Obstacles and Ergonomic Clearances

Before finalizing your dimensions, identify all structural and utility obstacles. Skirting boards, light switches, electrical sockets, ventilation grilles, and heating pipes must be meticulously mapped. Skirting boards must either be removed or the wardrobe base must be designed with a recessed plinth to bypass them. Access to junction boxes must never be sealed behind permanent backing boards; instead, design removable service panels within the shelving modules. Additionally, calculate the door swing radius for hinged doors to ensure they do not collide with radiators, light fixtures, or adjacent bedroom furniture.

Materials, Tolerances, and the Order of Operations

When translating your raw measurements into a cutting list or design plan, always subtract a safety tolerance. A standard installation clearance of 15 mm to 20 mm should be deducted from the total width and height. This gap allows the carcass to be maneuvered into place and leveled using adjustable feet, before being sealed elegantly with matching filler strips. Always measure after all wet trade work—such as plastering, screeding, and the installation of the final flooring material—is fully complete and cured, as even a 3 mm thick underlayment can disrupt the fit of a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe frame.
