Spin drying relies on centrifugal force to drive liquid water out of fabric pores and through the perforations of the drum. As the drum rotates at speeds ranging from 400 to 1600 revolutions per minute (RPM), garments are pressed flat against the outer wall. The stress on the textile fibers is determined by two main factors: the rotational speed and the weight distribution of the wet load. High RPMs subject delicate materials, such as wool or silk, to excessive friction against the drum metal, causing fibers to stretch beyond their elastic limit or felt due to heat and pressure. Heavily structured garments can lose their shape entirely, while loose weaves may distort permanently.

Selecting the Correct RPM for Different Material Structures

Protecting your clothes starts with selecting the precise rotation speed tailored to the specific fiber type and weave density:

  • Delicates and Wool (400 - 600 RPM): Animal fibers like wool and cashmere, as well as delicate silks and synthetics, have low tensile strength when wet. Low speeds prevent the fibers from locking together, which causes felting and shrinkage.
  • Synthetics and Blends (800 - 1000 RPM): Polyester, polyamide, and mixed fiber everyday clothes can withstand moderate pressure. This speed efficiently extracts water without setting deep creases that require intensive ironing.
  • Cotton and Linen (1200 - 1400 RPM): Heavy vegetable fibers have high wet strength and can tolerate maximum centrifugal force. However, spinning linen at maximum speed for too long can break the natural flax fibers, leading to premature wear.

The Geometry of Loading: Balancing the Drum

An unbalanced load is the primary cause of uneven water extraction and destructive mechanical stress. When garments clump on one side of the drum, the machine experiences severe vibrations that translate into violent, erratic movements. This uneven pressure stretches the fabrics caught at the impact points. To prevent this, always load the drum loosely and evenly. Mix larger pieces, like sheets, with smaller items to ensure uniform distribution. Never pack the chamber tightly; leaving the top third of the drum empty allows garments to shift naturally into a balanced ring during the initial low-speed balancing phase of the cycle.

Techniques to Minimize Friction and Creasing

Reducing direct physical contact between the textile surface and the metal drum prevents pilling, snagging, and structural deformation. Utilizing mesh laundry bags is highly effective for delicate items, as the fine mesh acts as a buffer against high-speed friction. Additionally, always turn garments inside out before spinning; this ensures that any surface wear occurs on the interior of the clothing, preserving the visible outer texture. Fastening all zippers, buttons, and hooks is also crucial, as loose metal elements can snag surrounding fabrics under high centrifugal pressure, causing tears and thread pulls.

Post-Spin Action: Timing and Fiber Relaxation

Leaving wet, tightly compressed clothes inside a stationary drum causes temporary creases to become semi-permanent as the fibers cool and dry in deformed positions. Unload the drum immediately after the spin cycle ends. Give each garment a firm, snapping shake to align the wet fibers and release tension before hanging or flat-drying. This simple mechanical movement relaxes the textile structure, minimizes the need for high-heat ironing, and preserves the natural drape of the fabric.
